Aleksandar Nikolic

My name is Aleksandar Nikolic , I'm 30 years old Veterinary medicine student, show judge for Siberian Husky , Alaskan Malamutes and Samoyeds and I'm first musher in Serbia & Montenegro since December 1994, one of the founders of Siberian Husky Club in my country , founder and president of Polarex Beograd Klub , club with the mission to popularize and establish Sleddog Sport here in SCG. I'm winner in first SCG sleddog race Kopaonik 1999. and first SCG Sleddog racing champion at C1 & A1 class. Second half of my life, I dedicated to these dogs. In a quest for knowledge, I reached for Veterinary medicine, for dog genetics and types of breeding, raising, reproduction and psychology, their minds and spirits, social and pack life, their character and temper to meat them to the bones, to their exposed thoughts. "Even when my dog don't think, I know what he mean" is my way. Veterinary studies gave me option to understand complex build, functionality and purpose of dogs bodies, theirs nature.

Cynology section and studies gave me opportunities to get the whole picture about dogs as predators, their prehistory, to understand their place at the great circle of life on this planet. Nutrition opened doors of mysterious metabolism, building body cells...

As a member of Cynology section I followed discussions with our best experts. Obrad Djokich, the most simpatic policeman I ever met, in his 18th year already become world famous in dog training and learning project with German Shepards. Slobodan Novak, one of the rarest people here with complete cynologist preoccupation, is Veterinarian, show judge with great knowledge, nutritionist and creator of dog feeding project for army dogs, and their breeder. Milivoje Uroshevich, our greatest name in a world is also Veterinarian, show judge and expert for entire dog groups, collector of great knowledge.

Work with these dogs gives me a chance to make my talent for understanding animals and their needs and gift to communicate with them. Training dogs from different owners and living with them made my experience richer for practice work and results. Acknowledgment came later with my contacts with European and North American mushers.

From 1996 till 2000, I organized Musher schools at mt. Kopaonik in Serbia and mt. Durmitor in Monte Negro. This was my way to involve some new people in sleddog sport. At the same time I was running with their dogs, making a new team every year, and explaining to people some basics of running the dogs : training and conditioning dog team, feeding and veterinary care.

In 1999 year, in March the sixth, I organized first international Sleddog Race in SCG, on mountain Kopaonik. Short, sprint, but my first race. I won in A-class with my 8 dog team, with 1 min in front of second musher Stanko Jambor, young man from Slovakia, with very good sprint team, and the race was 5 km long, and I prefer long distance, with big team, good speed and lots of hours of challenging drive. Unfortunately, two weeks later NATO started bombing campaign against SCG, and lots of video and photo material wasn't useful during the war days.

In 1994 I was a part of a Sleddog tour project, at mountain Kopaonik, with my first 4 dog team, from Belgrade. In 2000, I went on mountain Durmitor, for a two months with 12 Huskies and three sleds on a few trails and almost 200 happy tourists. Until 2001. I trained 28 Siberian Huskies, 3 Malamutes and one Samoyed. My largest team was 10 dogs team, at mt. Durmitor, on the frozen Black Lake.

During the summer of 2001. I was at IFSS sleddog training camp for juniors in Poland , working as a sleddog trainer and musher trainer, together with Edvard Schumet, young Slovenian Skijoring & Cane Cross racer. There I had an opportunity to work with more than fifty dogs in 4-11 dogs teams : Alaskans for sprint and mid-distance races, cross breeds like Husky-Eskimo dog, Husky-Greenland dog, Husky-Laika, Malamute-Polish hound and Graysters for sprint races and Skijoring.

Jerry Scdoris

Fall of 2001. and following winter and spring I spent with unbeatable Jerry Scdoris, most successfull Oregon musher, training, conditioning and preparing his race dog team, and taking care of hundred dogs in a kennel, Alaskans and crosses with pointers . Only that season I made 1350 km on dirt with 6-22 dogs teams and almost 2000 km on sleds with 10-18 dogs teams. His daughter Rachael took dogs for inaugural Atta Boy 300 and took 18th place. Doug Swingley won the race...I followed work on that race and learned a lot about entire process of creating an world class sled dog race.

In May 2002. I visited Ken Anderson and Gwen Holdmann, most talented young couple among mushers, and Dean Siebold and took his 6 racing dog team for 35 km run at frozen Quarz Lake, Delta Junction, near Fairbanks, Alaska. That was my first run with one of the top sprint sleddog teams, one of those runs of life. Including training with Jerry Scdoris and his 16 competitive racing dog team, double sleds and narrow forest trail for 80 km and four hour ride of joy and happiness. Also I visit and exercise dogs with this year Iditarod champion with record run, Martin Buser and have had great talk with greatest live world champion Gareth Wright who said : " There must be something with your aura, you know I am old and sick man and do not take visits, but with your call it was different, from beginning I could feel it. "

Thank you Gareth.

All my dogs are trained and handled all by myself, without any help, books, magazines, videos, but with lots of hours of patient and hard work, intuitions, and taking care of dogs in traditional, "old" way. For ten years I was giving interviews on TV and radio stations, magazines, newspapers, 45 min VHS tape about S.Husky...which is my contribution to popularization of Sled Dog sport.

First Sleddog Sport Seminar I organized in August 2002. with complete details for beginners and sport news for active SCG mushers.

December 21st 2002. at second International Sleddog Race in SCG, held on Palich lake, I won in C1 class with my dog team and with fastest time on race, I'm race winner.

Until now, have had worked with more than 250 dogs different breeds and crossbreeds, have more than 6000 km with dog teams on sleds, more than 3000 km on dirt with carts, ATV and bike, jogging or swimming with dogs during summer, long walks & exploring trails with lead dogs and both ways of working and taking care of dogs an old, traditional and new modern way with lot's of stimulation.
